Crested Butte Camping (Free!) | Kebler Pass Camping
With the major task of replacing the roof on our travel trailer out of the way, we were ready for some Colorado adventures! And we set off to find free camping near Crested Butte so we'd have a good home base for exploring the beauty in the area. So from our camp spot in Montrose, we headed up to Kebler Pass Road. It was exciting to watch as the scenery transitioned from dry and shrubby to green and mountainous! And we found some great dispersed camping options in the area.

Free Camping Near Montrose | Uncompahgre Plateau
If you're looking for free camping near Montrose, there are numerous dispersed sites along the main well travelled dirt road. And if you have off-road toys, the numerous roads and trails would make this area a lot of fun. This is also a great camping option if you're in the area visiting Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. It's only about a half hour drive to reach the national park.

If you turn onto the right forest road, there are some great areas for dispersed camping near Purgatory! And many of the spots are easily accessible with great surrounding scenery!

Free Camping on Forest Road 616 | Happy Jack
After our beautiful experience camping along the Mogollon Rim, we continued north and found camping on Forest Road 616 near Happy Jack. We had been looking at the map and the nearby trails in the area and found some intriguing options that we wanted to check out. Camping off of Forest Road 616 made for a convenient spot to boondock in the woods while setting off on a couple adventures in the area. Free Camping on the Mogollon Rim in Arizona
When we left our last boondocking spot in Camp Verde, we had no idea that we were going to find such great camping on the Mogollon Rim! All we knew was that we had had enough of the 90 degree temps that we were experiencing in Camp Verde! That's why we decided to head up towards Payson to get to higher elevation and get in some trees! We had no idea how much we were going to enjoy camping near Mayer, Arizona! Honestly we didn't know the town of Mayer existed and had no idea we were going to be camping nearby for two weeks. Sometimes it's the random spots that we stumble upon with absolutely no expectations that end up being the best boondocking experiences.

At a glance, Camp Verde looks and feels like a small town overshadowed by some big destinations - Phoenix, Sedona, and Flagstaff. It took us two separate occasions to see that camping near Camp Verde is actually like striking gold!
