Longboarding the Santa Clara River Trail | Cottonwood Cove
There are a lot of paved trails around Saint George, Utah that were great for getting around on a longboard! During our time in the Saint George area we checked out a few of the trails (and sections of trails) on the Saint George Trail System.
Our longboarding adventures on the Saint George Trail System started when we found the Sk8 George Skate Park and skated the Hilton Drive portion of the Santa Clara Trail. Since then we have also skated the Sand Hollow Wash and Chuckwalla sections of the trail. From there, the adventure continued to a really fun downhill Suburbia Neighborhood.
For our next skate sesh we picked up the Santa Clara River Trail again – starting at Cottonwood Cove Park. This is about where the Santa Clara River Trail ends/begins.
Our Experience Longboarding Cottonwood Cove Section
To start this section of the Santa Clara River Trail, we parked at the Cottonwood Cove Park. Since we were there already, we couldn’t help but notice that this park had some awesome playground equipment! After we scared all the kids away (kidding!), we had the whole playground to ourselves! We enjoyed the 10 foot suspended teeter-totter the best! But they also had some cool spinning things to get yourself dizzy, as well as a really cool half pipe type contraption. We’ve never seen anything like it. It was fun and similar to riding a skate board in a bowl.
Utah is known for having some great rock climbing, and this playground is constructed in that spirit with many rock climbing opportunities. There is a fun 20 foot wide rock climbing wall as well as a few other rock climbing obstacles on the playground.
When we were done climbing, spinning and playing we took the trail 1.3 miles from Cottonwood Cove Park to Tonaquint Park. The paved trail is smooth asphalt and was pretty mellow. This section of the trail runs along a stream and passes a cemetery before reaching Tonaquint Park.
As we neared Tonaquint Park, the trees were beautiful and provided a canopy and some shade. This ended up being another awesome Saint George Park! There were a couple different playgrounds, sand volleyball, tennis courts, and a huge interactive playground with a periodically erupting volcano simulation! And there was even a miniature train that kids could ride.
From Tonaquint Park, we continued to follow the Santa Clara River Trail for another mile to the Southgate Golf Course. It got more congested in this area and we decided to head back to Cottonwood Cove Park.
More Longboarding in the Area
From the golf course, the trail leads into the city a little further where it links up to the Hilton Drive Trail segment. This segment is the one we checked out previously that leads to the Sk8 George skatepark.
Another great longboarding spot in this area is the Tonaquint Neighborhood. This neighborhood was located off of South Tonaquint Drive directly across the street from Tonaquint Intermediate School. This particular neighborhood caught our eye because of the hills, minimal traffic, and a tip from a local longboarder.
This was a fun neighborhood to skate, with smooth streets, hills, and plenty of room to practice power slides. Also, there was minimal traffic.
Along with some great longboarding, there is also tons of great hiking opportunities in St. George! We hiked the Red Hollow Hike, we walked among the Bristle Cone Pines, hiked the Hellhole Canyon, and explored the Ashdown Gorge.
