Dancer Longboard Shape and Features
A dancer longboard is a longboard with features that complements the dancing riding style. As you would imagine, the dancing riding style involves a lot of footwork that may include series of steps and cross steps all while cruising along on your board. To accommodate the steps and movements along the board, dancer longboards are usually very long compared to a standard longboard giving the rider plenty of room to dance while cruising around.
Dancer Longboard Deck Features
The standard length for a dancer longboard typically ranges between 45 – 50 inches long. Our Lost Coast Longboarding standard dancer longboard size is 48 in x 9.5 in.

The main platform area of a dancer longboard is made to be wide to allow for plenty of room for the riders steps. And the ends have a rounded nose and a rounded tail which are usually more narrow than the rest of the board. Also, the nose and the tail of the dancer longboard are commonly kicktails. This means that they are curved up to give the rider the leverage and ability to easily push down on them making the rest of the board go up in the air.
Kicktails are an important feature to a dancer longboard because many dance moves and tricks involve the board being airborne. It is also a vital feature when performing a manual (wheelie) or a nose manual.

The surface of a dancer longboard is often flat or sometimes a slight concave which allows for stable foot placement. This is great for cruising and dancing on flat ground. Dancer longboards are top mounted decks, meaning the trucks and wheels are mounted to the bottom of the deck. The shape of the dancer longboard is similar to a freestyle board as in the nose and tail are more narrow then the rest of the board. This is important because the cut out shape of the nose and tail provide space for the wheels during a sharp turn or during carving.
A dancer longboard is recommended for dancing tricks and cruising on flat level surfaces. It’s not a shape recommended for downhill riding.
Dancer Longboard Materials
A dancer longboard can be made of a variety of materials. Traditionally skateboards are made of wood. Different brands and companies use different types of wood to make longboards. The type of wood used in the construction of a longboard can affect the ride and performance of the board.
For instance, a hardwood would be ideal if a rider is looking for a very sturdy board that will carry momentum and speed well. Although a hardwood material will help create a stable platform for dancing, hardwoods are usually rather heavy. This weight factor can make it harder to perform kick tricks and to get the board airborne.
Many riders in search of a dancer longboard look for a bouncy board that can add a trampoline feel. The flex can add fluidity to the dancer moves and add some bounce to their steps. To achieve this feeling, a bamboo/fiberglass combination would be a great option. The composite combination makes for a lightweight but strong board that has a lot of flex. This type of material is also good for pumping through turns which can add to a riders dancing experience.
