Our Experience Hiking Dinosaur Trackway Trail
After learning about the history of dinosaurs in the area and getting to see and touch real dinosaur bones at Dinosaur National Monument we couldn’t wait to see actual dinosaur tracks!
The drive to the trailhead and the scenery at the trailhead itself was already cool! Dinosaur Trackway Trail begins along a trail of sand and rocks through junipers and fun rock formations. The trail is very well marked, with little painted dinosaur prints to follow to stay on track. Don’t worry, there are real dinosaur tracks at the destination.
Along the way, there are close up rock formations, wildflowers and some pretty vast views. Eventually the Red Fleet Reservoir can be seen in the distance as well.
It’s easy to enjoy the scenery as the trail continues to follow the painted dinosaur prints. Then before you know it, there’s a sloping stretch of sandstone leading down to the water. This is where the real dinosaur tracks are.
Hike it Later – Pin it Now!
Take the time to read the information signs about the dinosaur trackway. The sign teaches you how the tracks were formed and preserved. And it also points out where to see the best prints as they can be a bit hard to make out at first.
We walked around and spotted quite a few dinosaur tracks. Some of them were more obvious than others but the whole experience was pretty cool.
After we’d taken it all in, Shane jumped into the pretty blue reservoir. Then we headed back the way we came. If you’re up for more adventure in the area, there are several other trails nearby as well as an opportunity for water activities.
