Our Experience Dispersed Camping Near Gould
After spending some time camping in Arapahoe/Roosevelt National Forest near Red Feather Lakes, we couldn’t wait to go check out the steep peaks and plentiful lakes in the Rawah Wilderness! But first, we needed to get a bit closer. That’s when we headed west and found some great dispersed camping near Gould.
There’s not much to Gould, no gas stations or grocery stores. After we turned onto CR 21, we passed the small, rustic campground that seemed to be the only sign of life to be found so far. Shortly after, the road reaches a large open field with several fire rings. This area looks like a well used area for dispersed camping on Forest Road 740. We ended up camping near Gould throughout Labor Day weekend so we got to see just how many rigs were able to be crammed into this large field.
Luckily, we had gotten here before Labor Day and found a nice, private spot near the river about two miles past the open field. Our spot was really roomy but still a bit tricky due to all the stumps. We got
settled in and checked out the trail down to the river. It’s always nice being camped near water. We walked up and downstream while we were here just to check it out.

And one morning we watched a mother moose and her kid climb up from the stream into our camp spot. It was incredible seeing them so close and watching them weave through the trees ever so quietly.
There are two pay forest service campgrounds on Forest Road 740 as well, Aspen and Pines. If you continue along the forest road there are several dispersed camp spots. And we also noticed that there are lots of dispersed camp spots scattered along the branching forest service roads as well. Definitely scout ahead because the spots vary in size and distance from the main road.
While we were camping near Gould, we explored the creek in our backyard as well as walked some of the
nearby forest roads. But the highlights of camping in the area had to be getting to adventure in the Rawah Wilderness and State Forest State Park! Be sure to keep your eyes out for moose, as this area is
known for the number of moose.

Awesome post!! I saw your link on Reddit and will now be following along! Sick moto by the way, I bet that thing is fun!
We loved 37 days up in Granby and went skiing just about every day last winter. It was awesome. Winter park is close but if you want something smaller Granby has its own small ski park with plenty of greens plus blue and black runs. If you’re looking for a possible ski adventure in the snow I can recommend Granby, Co..We had a blast!

Thank you! We appreciate the follow! 37 days sounds like a great adventure, you can surly get a lot of exploring done with that much time. We love Colorado but tend to enjoy summers in the mountains, we don’t do so well in the cold lol
Happy adventures!
