Fantasy Canyon | Unusual Awesome Weathered Sandstone
Fantasy Canyon is a unique off the beaten path destination located near the dinosaur diamond that surrounds Vernal. Take a break from the dinosaurs and check out these odd, intricate sandstone formations and hoodoos artfully shaped by weathering and erosion. Fantasy Canyon is a rather small, concentrated area of quizzical formations among miles and miles of unsightly oil fields.
It makes a great addition to a road trip in the area. Or an interesting destination for those that are full of curiosity and appreciation for nature’s wonders.

Our Experience Hiking Fantasy Canyon
After a bit of a drive through a vast landscape of oil fields, we reached the parking area for Fantasy Canyon. But first we saw several wild horses near the oil structures.
At the parking area there is a vault toilet, information sign and a couple picnic tables.
From the sign, we followed a stone lined path into the mini canyon of weird and wild sandstone formations.
The path nears several cool pinnacle formations made up of the weathered sandstone creating unique shapes. It then leads further into Fantasy Canyon.
Here the hoodoos and formations tower as they surround you and become more dense. But the
structures themselves are delicate creating arches and shapes that will get your imagination going.

In the heart of the mini canyon of sculptures there’s a well placed circular bench where you can sit and take it all in.
We followed the well worn path through Fantasy Canyon that continued up to a vantage point.
As we were exploring we stayed on existing paths and were careful not to damage the fragile features. Explore with care!
Although Fantasy Canyon is just a short adventure but it’s a pretty cool sight to see!
