A Walk Among Bristlecone Pines
While we were in the Cedar City area, we took advantage of the opportunity to stroll among some amazing Bristlecone Pines. These trees can live to be thousands of years old! If these trees could talk, I would love to listen.
About 17 miles east from Cedar City on the UT-14 there is a pull out area on the shoulder for trail parking. To walk among the Bristlecones, follow the 0.6 mile trail as it loops to a boardwalk and back. The trail is pretty level, easy to follow, and takes you through spruce and firs.
The trail leads to a wooden observation deck. Here you are surrounded by majestic Bristlecone Pines and are also granted a terrific view into a canyon and beyond.
From here you can see the vastness of the areas landscape and countless conifers. Across the way you can see the northern section of Zion.
This was a very peaceful setting and we had the trail to ourselves. The trail continues through the woods and you loop back to the parking area. It’s always a pleasure to be among Bristlecones!

We hope you enjoyed this short article about the Bristlecone Pines near Cedar City. For you longboarders out there, the trailhead for this short hike is at the top of an VERY large hill on the UT-14. The road is smooth and very curvy. For the extreme downhill longboarders, this would be an epic 16 mile run towards Cedar City… but I decided against bombing this one.
At the bottom of the UT-14 there is a trailhead for a paved path called Coal Creek. You can check out our experience longboarding the Coal Creek Trail here. An awesome canyon adventire to check out in the Cedar City area is the Ashdown Gorge, or the shorter Red Hollow Hike.
