Longboarding Anza Borrego
Anza Borrego State Park is like a playground – always something fun to discover! We climbed dryfalls, explored caves, and followed meandering canyons. While we were in Anza Borrego we spent some time exploring the canyons at the Calcite Mine. This was a great place to wander in the wild desert for a bit mostly because there are a number of narrow canyons to check out! And exploring the mud caves was another awesome experience, like wandering through a labyrinth. Longboarding Anza Borrego was next on our list of things to do.
Longboarding Anza Borrego
After we explored this area we took the opportunity to longboard around some of the winding desolate roads in the park. The first hill that we longboarded in Anza Borrego State Park was a section of the S-22 right outside of the Arroyo Salado Campground.
This run was not too long but it was fun. I started at the bottom, and kicked all the way up the hill first. There is a trailhead on the top of the hill, and that is where I started to ride downhill. The road is a little rough, but easy enough to ride on with soft wheels. To me, the hill looks steeper than it actually is. I thought it was a pretty mellow downhill.
This particular hill is a little bit dangerous because the curves really limit visibility and the speed limit on the road is 55. The times that I skated this hill, traffic was minimal but semi trucks and vehicles with trailers do frequently use this narrow road. So if you ride here, watch out for traffic! And giant scorpions!
In the Area
The town of Borrego Springs, has a ton of giant sculptures all around. This giant scorpion is just one of the sculptures to be seen in the area.
If you’re interested in longboarding Anza Borrego, we would recommend staying at the Arroyo Salado Primitive Campground. It’s right by this longboarding run. The campground is undeveloped, but does have a vault toilet. There are numerous camp spots to choose from and many of them are quiet roomy.
The Arroyo Salado Campground does have a through sandy road that leads to some pretty cool areas. You can follow this road to get to adventures such as Truckhaven (pictured below) and Seventeen Palms. We found this campground to be mostly empty during the weekdays and still calm on weekends with plenty to see and do in the area.
Another cool place that is on the same road as this longboard hill is the scenic badlands overlook, Font’s Point. To get to this overlook you have to take a fun 2 mile dirt road from the S-22. This is a beautiful place to overlook the badlands. The viewpoint sits above the badlands allowing you to look down below at the labyrinth of trails and badlands.
We took advantage of this backdrop to shoot some pictures of our Special Edition Cruise Board. Take a look and tell us what you think in the comments below!
For more opportunities for longboarding Anza Borrego State Park, there are other larger hills in the park to longboard down! One of my favorite runs is the long and winding Yaqui Pass Hill. And if you’re in that area of the park we recommend checking out Quartz Vein Wash. You can read about our experience in Quartz Vein Wash here.
