Lehigh Rails to Trails
Lehigh Rails to Trails is a nice paved trail on what was formerly a railroad corridor. It’s a nice non-motorized trail that connects Bunner, Flagler Beach and Palm Coast but we just loved that it was a pretty, tree lined, smooth asphalt path. And it passes through the Graham Swamp Conservation Area allowing for great views of the wetlands and the chance to spot wildlife!
The entire trail spans about 8 miles from US 1 north of Bunner and ends at Colbert Lane. The majority of the trail parallels the Lehigh Canal and the trail only crosses the road twice. There are three different access points for the Lehigh Rails to Trail. We began our cruise at the Colbert Trailhead. There was plenty of parking and a clean restroom.
At A Glance:
Directions: The trailhead address is 5875 Colbert Lane, Palm Coast. If you’re coming from Palm Coast, head east on Palm Harbor Parkway towards Cocoa Way. Turn left onto Palm Coast Parkway and follow it for about 0.7 miles. Then turn left onto Colbert Lane and after 5.5 miles the Lehigh Rails to Trails Trailhead will be on the right.
Distance: The trail spans about 7 miles.
At the Trailhead: There is a decent sized parking area, bathrooms, water fountains, a bike tool station and a trail map.
Surface Type: Asphalt
Cruising Lehigh Rails to Trails Path
This was our first time visiting the Palm Coast/Flagler Beach area! So we checked out the trail map and realized the trail was a pretty straight shot. From the parking area we had to follow the side walk just a short ways (about a quarter mile) to the start of the trail. The sidewalk then led us into the woods on a nice board walk.
It was pretty bumpy on the boards, but it was a nice scenic 400 yard walk. Not only scenic but while walking across the board walk we saw a HUGE gator in the swamp! We were so stoked, such cool creatures!
Once we were on the Lehigh Rails to Trail the pavement was very smooth, just how we like it. The path is about 10 feet wide with mile markers along the way. This helped us have an idea of about where we were along the trail. It’s a very beautiful that goes right through the dense jungle next to the pretty swamp-like canal.
The vines, palms, and trees gave this trail a really cool vibe. The canopy overhead was great for providing some much needed shady spots.
The path left the jungle at some points and ran along the road on sidewalks until it reunited with the smooth asphalt trail.
The path runs along the canal and crosses over a few bridges, too. On this cruise we saw an alligator, a turtle, a snake, and plenty of birds.
