Longboarding in Twentynine Palms
Of all the places to go and of all the places to longboard, longboarding in Twentynine Palms probably isn’t the first of either to come to mind. Our on the road lifestyle takes us all over but we always end up going south for winter. The desert is a great place to be when its cold and wet most other places. It does get cold in the desert but it tends to stay dry and the sun usually comes out which helps us to get outside and avoid cabin fever!
When we do head south we often find ourselves in the Joshua Tree and Twentynine Palms area. Many people would say that there’s not much here but that’s what we like about it. We love the small town and the big adventures all around it! And we’ve met some incredible people here as well that keep drawing us back. Since we spend so much time here, I set out to find some fun spots for longboarding in Twentynine Palms!
Longboarding in Twentynine Palms Skate Spots
Luckie Park
Luckie Park is a really nice community park. Some of the amenities include basketball courts, sports fields, workout equipment, playgrounds, restrooms, shaded pavilions and a pretty cool skatepark. In addition to the skatepark, there are some chill sidewalks that are pretty smooth around the perimeter of the park. I also mentioned Luckie Park because it makes a good home base for the other roads and hills that I recommend for longboarding in Twentynine Palms.
Twentynine Palms Skatepark in Luckie Park
As I mentioned, the Twentynine Palms Skatepark is located within the larger Luckie Park. Here you’ll find a full concrete skatepark with a variety of features and obstacles. There is a half pipe, a U-shaped bowl, several ramps, ledges, boxes, stairs and rails. I enjoyed longboarding the smooth transitions and the U-shaped bowl. It’s a pretty fun, mellow skatepark worth checking out if you’re in the area and looking for longboarding in Twentynine Palms. Also, there are lights for night riding which is great if day temps are too hot.
Main Hill: Two Mile Road
When driving around Twentynine Palms it is easy to find the largest hill in the area. It’s located on Adobe Road going north off of the CA-62, towards the Marine Base. Adobe Road is a main road with five lanes and can be busy depending on the time of day. Luckily there is a traffic light and an intersection with Two Mile Road, a much less busy road on top of the hill. So the hill on Two Mile Road is our first hill recommendation for longboarding in Twentynine Palms. Two Mile Road heads east and is a great huge hill to longboard down!
The hill on Two Mile Road is about a mile long and a straight shot the entire way. You will descend 150+ feet from the top to the bottom of the hill. There is a very wide sidewalk that runs parallel to the road but if you are going to be longboarding down this hill I recommend NOT riding on the sidewalk for a few reasons. First, there are numerous cracks that are way too big to handle on a board.
Second, you’ll find that there is a lot of sand and gravel on the sidewalk which is not ideal longboarding conditions. And of course, it may become dangerous to other people on the sidewalk when going downhill fast on a longboard.
Cruise it Later – Pin it Now
From the top of the hill on Two Mile Road, the road starts off pretty steep giving riders a great starting speed for the hill. Riders will build up speed and go pretty fast on the first half of the hill. Then about half way down, the hill mellows out giving riders time to slow down before reaching the bottom of the hill. The road starts as a normal two lane road at the top but eventually widens to another lane.
The extra lane is great because the rider now has more room to carve and slow down if necessary. And it also gives cars an opportunity to safely pass a longboarder whose just chillin down the hill. The bottom of the long hill on Two Mile road is cool because it ends at a very long and smooth parking lot that leads right to the skatepark!
The hill on Two Mile Road is also home to a couple good side streets to check out while longboarding in Twentynine Palms. These neighborhoods are all downhill and provide a number of different streets to try.
Downhill Neighborhood: Palo Verde Avenue
Going downhill from the light on Two Mile Road you can take the first left onto Palo Verde Avenue. The road into this neighborhood is downhill and gets pretty steep.
From here, cruise around to check out a few of the other roads nearby.
Windy Steep Little Hill: Marine Avenue
Marine Avenue is another smooth road that’s good for longboarding in Twentynine Palms. It also stems from Two Mile Road. This little hill on Marine Avenue is steep and windy.
And although this neighborhood is small I found that the hill on Marine Avenue is a fun hill to hit a few times before moving on.
Large Steep Hill: Cactus Drive
For a much steeper hill, experienced riders can check out Cactus Drive. This hill is great for learning power slides because it is steep, allowing riders to build speed very quickly. It’s a good spot for longboarding in Twentynine Palms too because there is a lot less traffic here than on the other hill.
There are a few other steep roads around this hill that I did not get a chance to check out. Explore with caution because the road conditions might be rough in some areas! It is often windy in the desert causing these roads to regularly have sand on them, which is usually bad for someone skating. So be prepared for the conditions and
wear pads if you’re unsure of what to expect. And if you’re trying to power slide it might help your wheels slide.

Hey Gina! Thank you for these skate spots! I’ve skated Indian Cove Road starting from the campground and that’s a great run. I haven’t skated the other spots but next time we’re in Twentynine I’ll be sure to check em out. Thanks for the comment!
