Longboarding Island Trail in Lake Havasu City
Longboarding Island Trail is a mellow cruise around an inner circuit of the island in Lake Havasu City. The paved trail is a bit short – clocking in at 3.6 miles – but it’s a loop so there’s no repetition of scenery like on an out and back. Unless of course you want to do a few laps.
In addition to the perk of it being a loop, there are numerous areas where you can take a break from the hot desert sun and wander over to the waters edge to cool off. We enjoyed the scenery of Lake Havasu surrounding us as we were longboarding Island Trail. Follow us as we cruise around the island!
Quick Info: Longboarding Island Trail
Distance: 3.6 mile loop
Surface Type: Asphalt
Directions: Click here to get directions to the parking area for Island Trail. Cross the London Bridge towards the island and there is a parking area on the right off of McCulloch Blvd N right before the intersection with Beachcomber Blvd.
Know Before You Go: The traffic on Island Trail is regulated – pedestrians follow the loop in a counter-clockwise direction and bikes follow the loop clockwise. Bikes were zipping around the loop much quicker than we were. So while we were longboarding Island Trail we thought it best to follow the loop counter-clockwise.
Be Aware: Lake Havasu City gets extremely hot! And this path is exposed almost the entire time. Be sure to bring enough water and choose when to use this path wisely! You may want to limit use of this path to mornings and evenings throughout summer or during the “cooler seasons.
Good to Know: There is a water fountain where the trail begins near the parking area mentioned above.
Our Experience Longboarding Island Trail
We had never been to Lake Havasu City before but since we travel with the seasons we ended up in the area. And we were excited to not only be in the sunny desert but to also have a beautiful lake to enjoy! As we were checking out the area it didn’t take long for us to notice the London Bridge and to head over to check out Rotary Park where we found the really nice Lake Havasu Tinnell Memorial Skatepark. And we were excited to find that there was a scenic paved path to cruise with our longboards for further exploring!
As I mentioned above regarding the direction of traffic on the trail, we figured we couldn’t keep pace with the cyclists. So we thought longboarding Island Trail counter-clockwise made the most sense. The trail begins just across the street from the parking area near the drinking fountain and shaded bench.
Island Trail is very exposed nearly the entire time with sand and desert shrubs lining the trail. So in addition to lots of sun exposure, there are vast views of your surroundings. The trail itself is relatively smooth with some minor cracks as well as some larger bulges but we’ve definitely seen worse. There are also areas of the trail with sand and rocks to avoid.
Cruise it Later – Pin it Now
As we made our way further along the loop we were able to see the beautiful blue lake contrasting with the surrounding brown desert landscape. The loop parallels the main road around the island for the duration. And we also passed several mini lighthouses along the loop as well.
Probably the best part about longboarding Island Trail is that when we got really hot we just walked over to the lake and found a way down to the refreshing water. I thought for sure I was going to jump in. But once I put my feet in I was already sufficiently cooled down. But Shane went for it!
Once we were back on the trail we were on the homestretch. Although most of Island Trail is relatively level but towards the end there is definitely some mild downhill. This section of longboarding Island Trail was probably Shane’s favorite part, allowing him to gain some speed and pump.
And before we knew it, we were back where we started the loop! Longboarding Island Trail was a pretty cool experience. It allowed us to circumnavigate the island in Lake Havasu and find a little beach cove. And the trail itself was a good opportunity for a mellow cruise on the longboards.
