Longboarding the Amazing Asphalt Pump Track in Las Vegas
Yes, there has been a pump track in Las Vegas for awhile now at the Arroyo Grande Sports Complex. But now there is also a sick Velosolutions pump track in Las Vegas! And as we’ve come to expect from Velosolutions, this is definitely the best pump track in Las Vegas. And take it from me, it’s a lot of fun on a longboard. This curvy asphalt circuit of humps and banked turns measures in at 14,000 square feet of longboarding bliss. You can find this gem inside the Floyd Lamb Park in the far northwest corner of the Las Vegas area. While it is definitely worth the drive keep in mind that unfortunately, there is a fee.. So read on to find out more about what to expect at the Floyd Lamb Pump Track in Las Vegas!
First Impressions: Floyd Lamb Pump Track
We arrived at the Floyd Lamb Park to find a line of cars at the entrance booth. And this is where we realized you have to pay to get in the park (find out more about fee below). The directions to the pump track from the entrance booth are not very clear. We followed the road through the park and had to turn around at the end because we never saw the pump track. The pump track itself is not visible from the road. Follow the main park road and the pump track will be on the left. We parked close to tractors in a large gravel lot across from one of the ponds. From there you have to walk through the fence and on a dirt path for about 100 yards or so. Then you’ll find the asphalt pump track hidden behind the hills, eventually on the right.
Pros: Smooth asphalt, great circuit with turns in every direction
Cons: No lights, seating or shade of any kind.
Directions: Click here to get directions to the Floyd Lamb Park. After paying the entrance fee, follow the road straight until you reach the large gravel lot on the left. Park here and you’ll see a break in the fence as well as a sign/map of the mountain bike trails and pump track. Continue on the dirt trail and veer right to reach the paved Floyd Lamb Pump Track on the right.
Know Before You Go: There is a daily $6 per vehicle entrance fee for Floyd Lamb Park. Annual passes are available for $45. If you walk, bike or ride a horse into the park the entrance fee is $1.
Hours: April to September: 8 am to 8 pm and October to March: 8 am to 5 pm
Floyd Lamb Park Amenities: Picnic areas, grills, fishing ponds, walking trails, volleyball courts, wildlife, historic areas, open space, and mountain bike trails
Riders Thoughts: Floyd Lamb Pump Track in Las Vegas
The Floyd Lamb Pump Track in Las Vegas is a great pump track. And in my opinion, this is the best pump track in Las Vegas! The size and shape of this pump track is great for riding a longboard in a pump track.
The Floyd Lamb Pump Track map can be found in the large gravel parking area, a bit of a walk from the actual pump track. But the map (as well as the arrows painted on the actual pump track) show the shape, direction and flow pattern of the pump track.
The traffic flow takes riders around the perimeter of the pump track first. Then has a number of tight turns that zig-zag through the middle of the circuit. These banked turns in the middle zig-zags of the track have high walls and steep drops that keep riders on their toes and moving at a high speed.
I think having directional arrows on the pump track are great for helping to avoid accidents by creating a traffic pattern. But if you’re the only one on the pump track, there are many great transitions that riders can use to reverse the pattern to try taking the turns in opposite directions.
Many of the banked turns in the Floyd Lamb Pump Track in Las Vegas are very quick and steep. Advanced riders are going to love the high speed change of direction and the flow of this park, especially when riding a longboard. The humps through out the entire park are a great size for maintaining and building speed. And they’re also mellow enough that my longboard barley scraped the ground.
New riders may find the steep and sharp turns at this pump track to be a little intimidating or difficult. For another pump track in Las Vegas that might be better for beginners you can check out the Arroyo Grande Pump Track.
Shred it Later – Pin it Now
The engineers at Velosolutions have prepared for riders who do not want to take the steep banked turns. You’ll find that there is an easy transition for riders to go on up top of the banked turns instead of into the steep bank if they choose.
One other pretty cool feature of the Floyd Lamb Pump Track is the pavement strip. This adds an extra line that riders can use to air out of the pump track in the middle of one of the banked turns.
I think this little strip of asphalt is a great addition. I have seen riders do this line to air out of a pump track before but usually on a bike. That’s because the line is usually in the grass or gravel and they end up putting a bunch of gravel in the middle of a steep banked turn. But this addition makes it much more safe and fun for riders who can’t leave the pavement.
When riding a longboard in a pump track I highly recommend a longboard like the one I use which is a flexy bamboo/fiberglass longboard. Check out this article to learn why a longboard like this is ideal for longboarding in a pump track.
As I mentioned, the Floyd Lamb Pump Track has to be the best pump track in Las Vegas! I would recommend this pump track to any one who knows how to ride pretty good and wants to skate in an environment that can let them go fast and experience large banked turns.
