Skate Park in Hawthorne Nevada | Lions Park

As we were travelling north through Nevada we stopped in the town of Hawthorne. Hawthorne, Nevada is a small town with a population of about 3,300. We were in the area for about two weeks and we met some really awesome, friendly, welcoming and down to earth people during our stay. Great vibes throughout our travels really make a difference when experiencing a new area.

While in Hawthorne we found a great place to boondock, a hill to bomb and of course got to know the local skate park! The skate park is located at Lions park, behind the high school. The surrounding mountains make for a beautiful backdrop to this park.

First Impressions of the Hawthorne Skate Park:

The skate park is a small skate park, but it has a good layout and a number of obstacles.

Pros:
Smooth roll in to the bowl, “the boob”, and banked turns

Cons:
It’s a pretty small park.

Know Before You Go:
The desert gets hot! Bring water, there is no shade in the middle of the day.

Directions:

Hawthorne Skate Park is on the west side of the town off of Armory Road. It is part of Lions Park where there are sports fields and a playground area.
-From the 95S turn right onto Armory Road for .7 mile and the
park will be on the left.
-From the 95N, don’t take the business route and the road will
turn into 5th Street. Follow that until you find Armory Road
and make a right. The parking area will be on the right.

Riders Thoughts:

At the center of the skate park is an elongated bowl. The bowl is shallow and features a smooth lip allowing for a board to roll in from any angle.

There are a few slopes to higher boxes on either side of the bowl. One side of the bowl has a larger banked turn and steeper ramp. The banked turns and ramps in this bowl allow for a rider to pump and gain some speed to transition to other obstacles.

In one corner of the park there is a rounded mound nicknamed “the boob.” There are two different rails attached to the mound. One of the rails is built into the cement allowing for a smooth transition from cement to rail without having to ollie.

This is a great place for someone to learn how to grind and get a feel for how the board will react on a rail without having to leave the ground first. “The boob” is a great obstacle to roll up and pump down to maintain speed and momentum while cruising around the park.

There are two large banked turns in either corner of the park which help with the flow of the park in either direction. These raised turns also have coping around the lip all the way around.

There are a couple other rails and boxes around the park along with another rounded mound.

Overall this is a good beginner skate park. The flow and smooth transitions make for a fun park to cruise and chill. If you are looking for some serious street obstacles you may have to look else where. The bowl is also pretty small, good for a beginner to get a feel for banked turns, but you won’t be airing out of this one.

Hill to Bomb While in Hawthorne:

While we were in Hawthorne we met a cool guy named Nathan. He lived in the area and picked up one of our Fishtail Swirl series boards.

We had been asked by a few locals if we knew of the hill on dump road. Since we had not heard about we went with Nathan to explore. We found the hill and the actual street name is Corey View Drive. After making our way to the top of the hill and got to bomb it a few times! The hill is a two mile ride with really smooth pavement.

The ride was a pretty mellow run, but if you keep a straight line you definitely build up speed. Finding this hill was a hidden gem because we didn’t expect to find any smooth hills in the area.

There is a significant amount of military presence in Hawthorne. The town is proud of the nearby Hawthorne Army Depot and the military history of the town.
