Skatepark in Laramie Wyoming
Wyoming welcomed us with some buffalo at the Bear River State Park where we were able to break out the longboard and skate down the river trail. We entered Wyoming with the idea that there was not much of a skate board or longboard scene. So we were pleasantly surprised when we arrived in Laramie and found the Labonte Skatepark. The road conditions we experienced in Wyoming were a bit rough for long/skate boarding, so it made sense that they have a good skatepark.
The Laramie skatepark is located in the Labonte Park and Community Garden. In addition to the skatepark, Labonte park has has baseball fields, playgrounds, picnic areas, and a community garden. For more information about the park and its features check out the park website here.
First Impressions of the Skate Park in Laramie:
The skate park in Laramie Wyoming is a large skatepark featuring many smooth banked turns inside of a main bowl. There are a variety of great street obstacles as well as a very large loop/tunnel.
Pros:
This skatepark has many banked and smooth turns, roll over obstacles, and a steep roll in to the bowl. There are a bunch of rails and boxes to grind ranging from beginner to expert levels. The tunnel at the Laramie Skate Park is a large dramatic feature that is very intriguing to the eye and a fun obstacle to skate in.
Cons:
The surface of the concrete was slick in some spots due to wind and dust. There were also a ton of mosquitos when we were here. (May)
Know Before You Go:
Bring bug spray and a broom if you’ve got one.
Directions:
Labonte Skate Park is located at 1165 N 5th Street in Laramie Wyoming. The skate park conveniently close to the University of Wyoming.
Riders Thoughts:
The Laramie Skatepark has very smooth concrete with some roll over transitions that were good for a longboard. The main area of the skatepark is located inside of a large bowl.
The large bowl is mostly lined in coping with one steep roll in section at one end of the bowl.
The roll in points you straight at a large rounded pyramid in the bowl. The smooth transitions between pyramids and banked turns make it easy to keep your momentum and pump in order to keep cruising around the park. A spine between two sections of the bowl make a large “W” shape to one end of the park, making for great banked turns in either direction.
The perimeter of the skatepark is better suited for street style skating. This is where you can find a variety of obstacles such as rails, boxes, and ledges.
The perimeter also has a few other smooth, rounded obstacles as well as a quarter pipe. The perimeter of the park meets with the bowl via a large ramp that has two full length rails down the ramp.
The defining feature of the Skatepark in Laramie was the tunnel!
The large tunnel is a very interesting addition to the Laramie Skatepark. This is the first tunnel I have ever seen at a skatepark. It was a fun obstacle to play in and experience. The tunnel is open to the dirt and gravel at one end, but is connected to a small bowl with coping on the other end. This is an eye catching part of the Laramie Skatepark, but with such steep sides and fast transitions I found it to be an expert level obstacle. We didn’t get to see anyone skate in the tunnel, but it would be fun to watch someone shred in there!
Overall, the Lobonte Skatepark in Laramie Wyoming is a fun skatepark with a variety of obstacles ranging from beginner to expert. The separation of street and vert riding helps to create a good flow to the park. Having the street section of the park along the perimeter allows for a rider to take advantage of the rails and boxes before transitioning into the bowl to cruise. The pavement was smooth, the turns were banked, and good lines can be created in any direction! There are not many places to experience skating in a complete tunnel, so that was an exciting aspect of the Laramie Skatepark as well.
