Spearfish Bike Path in South Dakota
The Spearfish Recreational Trail is a cement trail that runs through the city of Spearfish, South Dakota. The 7.5 mile path is a combination of sidewalks, smooth pavement, and bike lanes on city streets. The Spearfish bike path connects many of the city parks and playgrounds on the trail and is easily navigated by the signs posted throughout the city. Much of the trail runs alongside Spearfish Creek through the large and peaceful Spearfish City Park. The Spearfish Recreational Trail also connects to Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway.
Upon arrival to Spearfish, South Dakota we decided to stretch our legs at the Spearfish City Park. This large open park is the perfect place to enjoy some fresh air and some outdoor activities. The Spearfish City park and the surrounding parks offer many amenities such as: playgrounds, tennis courts, basketball courts, tether ball, sand volleyball, picnic areas, exercise stations, and even swimming in the Spearfish Creek!
Longboarding the Spearfish Bike Path
The Spearfish Recreational Trail is a cement trail in great condition, so naturally I found it perfect for longboarding. The 7.5 mile path runs through the city of Spearfish and is a combination of sidewalks, smooth concrete, and bike lanes through the city streets. There is a variety of materials used to construct this path and (with the exception of one section by the university) they are all in good condition and smooth, making for a enjoyable ride on a longboard.
While riding the Spearfish bike trail in the park, the path is a smooth sidewalk winding through the trees and grass. The curves in the bike path make for some fun sections with quick turns and carves.
The Spearfish bike path had little traffic when we cruised on our boards. We did see a few bikes and there were people out walking in the park too. I imagine sometimes the park can be busy and I would expect more traffic when school lets out.

The ride on the sidewalk is peaceful and relaxing. There is not much slope so it is a relatively flat cruise that meanders alongside the creek.
Once out of the main Spearfish City park the path continues to town, the route being indicated by signs posted in the city. The concrete path eventually passes under the main road via a tunnel. The path curls sharply around at a decent slope before going under the bridge.
The path connects many places around the town including the Spearfish City Campground and the university. The cement path gets a little rough near the university. The path also takes you down a few of the city streets. These streets were one of the highlights of the path for me. I especially enjoyed this part of the path because the streets are very wide, very smooth, and downhill. The combination of these things made surfing these streets very enjoyable.
Outdoor Recreation in Spearfish
While riding a longboard on the trail I was able to wind through the community and see an awesome number of playgrounds and outdoor equipment for children.
Along with a number of playgrounds for the children, the Spearfish park system also has outdoor recreation activities for adults and teens. The community has basketball and tennis courts, tether ball, and even a few workout stations.
If you are in Spearfish during the summer, taking a dip in the Spearfish Creek is a great way to cool down! There were many people enjoying the water while we were here. The creek flows enough to maintain a constant swim in some deep areas of the creek. From the path I was able to find a rope swing that people used to jump into the creek.
