Kyburz Flat is a beautiful area for dispersed camping with an appealing combination of wide open meadows and wooded areas. The large grassy meadows are great for wildlife viewing where you'll primarily encounter a variety of migratory birds as well as deer, chipmunks and squirrels. And as we explored the woods while camping at Kyburz Flat we discovered so many different types and colors of wildflowers.

Owens River Road is a well known dispersed camping area but luckily there are a lot of spots to choose from! Dispersed Camping in Turtle Mountain Wilderness
The Turtle Mountain Wilderness is a protected area of Mohave Desert that ranges from sprawling shrubs and washes to eroded cliffs and dramatic volcanic plugs. Camping in Turtle Mountain Wilderness is a great way to experience the area. The peaceful natural setting is a relaxing place to set up camp but it also provides a good opportunity to hike and explore the Mopah Range as well as spot wildlife.

Crested Butte Camping (Free!) | Kebler Pass Camping
With the major task of replacing the roof on our travel trailer out of the way, we were ready for some Colorado adventures! And we set off to find free camping near Crested Butte so we'd have a good home base for exploring the beauty in the area. So from our camp spot in Montrose, we headed up to Kebler Pass Road. It was exciting to watch as the scenery transitioned from dry and shrubby to green and mountainous! And we found some great dispersed camping options in the area.

Free Camping Near Montrose | Uncompahgre Plateau
If you're looking for free camping near Montrose, there are numerous dispersed sites along the main well travelled dirt road. And if you have off-road toys, the numerous roads and trails would make this area a lot of fun. This is also a great camping option if you're in the area visiting Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. It's only about a half hour drive to reach the national park.

Free Camping on Forest Road 616 | Happy Jack
After our beautiful experience camping along the Mogollon Rim, we continued north and found camping on Forest Road 616 near Happy Jack. We had been looking at the map and the nearby trails in the area and found some intriguing options that we wanted to check out. Camping off of Forest Road 616 made for a convenient spot to boondock in the woods while setting off on a couple adventures in the area.
