Temecula Skatepark | Ronald Reagan Sports Park

While visiting the area we took a trip to the Ronald Reagan Sports Park to check out the Temecula Skatepark and the newly finished Temecula Pump Track. Already I was pleasantly surprised because not often do you find a sick pump track literally right next to a skatepark. And the skatepark itself is very large with a pretty unique and open layout.

I found that the most unique feature of the Temecula Skatepark had to be that it features a really large cement hill inside of the skatepark! After spending time at the skatepark I found that there are mixed feelings about this hill aspect but for a longboarder I thought it was a cool feature. And from a longboarders perspective the large size of the skatepark, the cement hill and a bowl plus it being located right next to the Temecula pump track made this combination a cement surfer’s paradise!

First Impression: Temecula Skatepark

The Temecula Skatepark is very big and completely fenced in. There’s a large stair and box configuration in the center of the big cement hill. Upon first glance, I could tell that it would be easy to go fast in this skatepark.

Pros:
Large cement hill and high walls/ramps throughout the park, bowl

Cons:
On my visit (11/19) I entered the skatepark with no pads and didn’t pay to use the facility. But staff made everyone leave the skatepark for a designated scooter only session. This can be frustrating if you’re in the middle of skating… And then, after doing some research I found that fees, hours and helmet/pad regulations fluctuate. Before visiting, check out the Temecula Community Services website for the latest rules and regulations to avoid any surprises.

Know Before You Go:
Be prepared for weird hours, fees and helmet/padding requirements. Also, be ready for traffic. There are restrooms and water fountains.

Riders Thoughts:

When we first approached the fenced Temecula Skatepark, I was concerned that we would have to pay to skate. There was a small building and staff at the entrance. But it turned out that I wasn’t charged. Our time in the skatepark was limited though because they made everyone get out due to a scooter only session…

When we walked through the entrance gate I immediately noticed that most of the skatepark was on the side of a very large hill. Most skateparks are usually set on a flat cement area with man made bowls or ramps of varying elevations,
but this skatepark seems to be cement on top of a main large hill and the surrounding smaller hills. I found this to be a cool and unique feature but not all skaters would feel the same way.

stairs, boxes and ledges coming down from the hill

At the Temecula Skatepark riders can choose how they would like to use gravity in their favor. The hill may not look very big to someone just walking around, but it’s a whole ‘nother story when you’re on wheels. This skatepark is great because the engineers have created a completely downhill environment with a number of different gradual declines, providing riders with a choice of ramp difficulty levels.

Experienced riders can start from the top of the hill and choose the steepest path to gain the most speed. Some of the transitions at this skatepark are smooth, making it easier for riders to maintain control while going down and then back up over the other hills in the skatepark. Once at the bottom of the large hill riders must choose to go up the steep pyramid box with angled transitions or to go around the box and continue to the ramps through the perimeter of the park.

There is a diversity of difficulty among the ramps making it great for riders of any skill level to skate in this skatepark. Some of the ramps in this skatepark are very mellow with smooth transitions. This allows riders to gradually increase their confidence as well as their skill levels. The left side of the Temecula Skatepark is great because riders can start at different points on the hill and take different paths down slowly getting higher and steeper until they are comfortable starting at the top of the hill.

Riders can find their way to the top of the hill in a variety of ways; climb the stairs, go up the hill, or use one of the ramps.

The large stair and box feature in the middle of the skatepark takes up most of the large hill. The variety of boxes and ledges make this main feature the only street like section of the skatepark. Unfortunately the size of the obstacles make it unrealistic for most skateboarders to be able to skate.

The perimeter of the bottom area of the skatepark has many steep ramps with some smooth and some angled transitions. These ramps are great for a rider who has just come down the large hill because it is easy to get high on these walls and maintain a good speed while cruising around. These walls are great for learning how to ride steep ramps in the skatepark. These angled ramps continue around and end up at the bottom of the hill on the right side of the stairs/boxes at a cool little round turn.

This turn is round and provides a very mellow downhill and a mellow banked turn. This area is ideal for learning how to enter a bowl or banked turn in both directions.

Even More Features

From the bottom, the top of the hill just looks like it’s where the park starts. But if you make your way up to the top of the hill, that’s where you’ll find a large bowl! This bowl is pretty cool because of its very unique shape as well as its multiple transitions. The bowl features coping along most of the perimeter but it also has a smooth ramp, and some tighter rounded roll in spots. This bowl is fun to skate because it gives riders the opportunity to drop into a vert wall but it also lets riders experience vert riding even if they can’t drop in.

There are many BMX bikes around the skatepark and the pump track, these guys have no problem going through the dirt and mud, so be aware of that when your cruising on the slick cement!

Overall, the Temecula Skatepark is a nice skatepark that’s good for longboarding. I really enjoy the cement surfing style of riding in the skatepark, but I also love going downhill on my longboard and this skatepark provided me with a little of both! This skatepark is great for riders looking to build confidence and skills. The gradual increases throughout the park are ideal for learning. And like I mentioned, it is literally right next to an amazing pump track!
