The Basin Skatepark and BMX Park in Flagstaff

The Basin Skatepark in Flagstaff is the largest and most advanced of the three different skateparks in Flagstaff. The Basin Skatepark and BMX Park is primarily set up for vert style riding with large bowls and steep drop ins. This skatepark is made to be a BMX park, but it is a great playground for experienced skateboarders.

First Impression of the Basin Skatepark in Flagstaff

The Basin Skatepark in Flagstaff is a bit off the main traffic routes so it was a nice surprise when we stumbled upon it. The skatepark is surrounded by a black metal fence all the way around the park. There is a lot of grass and overgrown small dirt ramps. And the skatepark itself is very large with two main bowls that are huge. There are a few small bowls and a large quarter pipe on the back side of the park.

Pros:
Large bowls, tall vert, enough space for a lot of speed in the bowls. Minimal traffic, almost no one here compared to the other two skateparks in Flagstaff.

Cons:
Full coping, no roll ins.

Know Before You Go:
Large vert and high speeds so pads are a good idea. Also – the sign at the entrance has many goofy rules including the first rule that says skateboards are prohibited. The sign also states that swimming, headphones, and climbing trees are prohibited.. I’m not sure how strict they are at enforcing these rules but it’s on the sign so I figured I should mention it.

Riders Thoughts:

The Basin Skatepark is a very large skatepark and the obstacles in this park are pretty advanced. Even though this skatepark is so big, there is minimal open space and almost no street obstacles. When you first enter the park you are brought right to edge of the first bowl. This bowl is at least six feet deep in the shallowest parts and parts of it reach about ten feet deep. The flat perimeter of the skatepark wraps around the other bowls and eventually to a large cement quarter pipe.

There are a total of four bowls in the Basin Skatepark in Flagstaff. Two of the bowls are very large with up to 12 feet of vert in the deep areas. The next bowl is a medium sized bowl at about 5 to 7 feet deep. And the last bowl is small at about 2 to 3 feet deep.

Bowl One

The first large bowl is surrounded in coping along all edges and provides four large pockets with various depths of vert. The transitions in this bowl are all very smooth and the banked turns are steep. Two of the pockets share a spine.

The entire bowl flows very well and because there are so many corners and banked turns a rider can easily switch the direction of the flow and take all turns both front and backside. A unique feature of this first bowl is the
rounded hump in middle of the bowl.

This hump gives riders the ability to pump up speed in the middle of a run making for long lines. I found that this hump was a great starting place on the longboard. The smooth transition from the hump to a steep banked turn made it easy to quickly build up speed.

This large bowl was the highlight of my longboarding experience at The Basin Skatepark in Flagstaff. Watch the video below to see a full run in this bowl.

Bowl Two

The next bowl is even larger. This second bowl ranges from about 8 feet to 12 feet deep and includes five different pockets, making this bowl a unique shape. Like the first bowl, this one is surrounded in coping on all edges.
The bowl also features a sharp turn, similar to a cradle, but not as large. The tall vert walls and banked turns make it great for a rider to build up speed or maintain a very fast speed if you drop in.

Bowl Three

The third bowl at The Basin Skatepark and BMX Park is a medium sized clover shaped pool bowl. This bowl is also surrounded in coping on all edges. Two of the three turns are about 5 feet deep and the deep section of the bowl is about 7 feet deep with a smooth transition on the bottom of the bowl.

This third bowl was smaller than the other bowls but the shape and depth made it flow well. Check out the video below to experience a run in this bowl!

Bowl Four

From the third bowl, the park narrows and leads down a large flat ramp then up another ramp to the fourth and smallest bowl. This bowl is a shallow figure eight bowl that is surrounded mostly in coping with a large bump/roll in on one side.

More About the Basin Skatepark in Flagstaff

From here the cement flows down to the large quarter pipe. The flow kind of seems to just stop here at the quarter pipe but if you were on a BMX bike it would be easy to reverse your direction of travel when you air out then go back up towards the main area of the skatepark.

Compared to the other skateparks in Flagstaff AZ, this one is much larger and more advanced. It’s possible that because of that there seems to be consistently a lot less people here. We skated here three or four separate times, and one time there were four people but all of the other times I had the entire skatepark to myself.. and its a huge park!

The advanced nature of the Basin Skatepark in Flagstaff makes it great for experienced riders, but does not offer a great place for someone to learn. With only one rail and practically no other street obstacles, this skatepark is made only for bowl/vert riding in mind. If you’re an experienced vert skateboarder, you will love this park. If you’re not an experienced vert rider, that’s ok because there are two other great skateparks in Flagstaff!
