Riders Thoughts:
Westlake Skatepark in Grand Junction, Colorado is an older skatepark and though a bit dated it has a unique layout. The sport of skateboarding has seen many changes since the 90’s. And of course the engineering behind skateparks has changed quite a bit in the last 30 years. So this skatepark gives an intriguing old school vibe that I enjoyed.
There are many smooth transitions and banked turns in this skatepark. These features give the park a good amount of flow. And also allow for riders to build and maintain speed as they cruise around the park. These same features also make this a fun skatepark for surfing the cement on a longboard.
It’s not unusual to find some graffiti at skateparks. But the artwork at the Westlake Skatepark in Grand Junction stands out because there is so much good art to discover. The subject matter and the application is good quality. It’s nice to see art opposed to vandalism. The colorful artwork adds to the skating experience here. As your eyes naturally go where you’re headed, and you continue to notice new art all over the park.
The main feature and largest section of the Westlake Skatepark is the large open ended bowl/vert area. This area is about 7 feet deep and has a very unique long “U”-ish shape with a rounded pocket on one side. The layout of this area in combination with the small cement hill in the skatepark makes it east for riders to build up speed and get high on the walls.
Shred it Later – Pin it Now
In my opinion is the most unique feature at the Westlake Skatepark is the deep keyhole shaped bowl. The first time we visited this skatepark this bowl had a cool “Death Bowl” graffiti in it. And that’s an appropriate name because this bowl is very deep, very steep, and the shape creates a very fast and non-stop skating experience. This bowl is most similar to an old school deep pool, which usually requires a drop in. But the unique keyhole shape/feature of this bowl allows for riders to roll into this crazy bowl!
Along with the keyhole death bowl and big vert area there is one more stand alone bowl near the middle of the skatepark. This bowl is a rounded square bowl that is about 6-7 feet deep and is fully lined in coping. Anyone who enjoys a good half pipe would probably love this bowl. But on the longboard I just ended up going in circles until I got dizzy.
This bowl is surrounded with a flat platform that has a round transitioned ramp down to the street section of the skatepark. This little feature actually adds quite a bit of flow to the park. And it’s a great way to transition from the vert section to the street section of the skatepark.
Checking Out the Street Section
The street section of the West Lake Skatepark in Grand Junction has a great layout and provides riders with a variety of street features. Riders can find a stand alone 6 foot metal ramp and a large pyramid box with a variety of rails and a few different ledges.
There is a slight downhill ramp and banked turn around the outside of the entire street section of the skatepark. This is another great feature that adds to the flow of the skatepark while also giving new riders a great place to gradually try bigger ramps to build skills and confidence.
Overall, the Westlake Skatepark in Grand Junction, Colorado is a great skatepark for riders of any skill level and riding style. There is a good variety of ramps and features found in many different sizes. And again, the flow and banked turns make this a good skatepark for longboarding.
